National Appreciate Your Pet Day was a couple weeks ago, which sparked my thoughts of the special love story we have with our sweet cat, Lilah. It's been almost two years since adopting our little miracle cat. As I've mentioned before, I refer to Lilah as my "miracle pet" because she entered our lives when we were REALLY needing some extra love. It's also a miracle that I'm not allergic to her considering the fact that I've been deathly allergic to cats my entire life.
So what's kept our love going strong for almost two years now??? I'm sharing my top three tips for fostering a healthy and loving relationship with your pet!
Tip #1: Respect each others' boundaries. When we first adopted Lilah, we knew very little about her personality. She was a very co-dependent cat and would follow me around everywhere; which annoyed me. Lilah isn't the biggest fan of being held (unless it's her idea) so she was also annoyed by constantly being picked up by the kids. Thankfully we found a happy medium with our boundaries and she learned how to become more independent. WE learned to give her a little space and to let her be in charge of the cuddle sessions.
Tip #2: Figure out a way to deal with pet "mess" and smells so you continue to love your pet! Cats are relatively clean animals, so I never thought pet mess would be an issue for us. Until Lilah started shedding and I was like "nope, this isn't going to work!" I also didn't want to have the "cat smell" in my house. Thankfully I discovered Swiffer Sweeper Dry and Wet Pet Refills that have Febreze odor defense that helps to trap and lock all the dust and fur balls floating around my house.
And shout out to Febreze Air Heavy Duty Pet Odor Eliminator to tackle any of those stinky smells (especially near the room that holds her cat litter). Lilah enjoys lounging on ALL the furniture like most cats do, a habit that only annoys me if she leaves her cat smell behind. I snagged Febreze Fabric Pet Odor Eliminator and couple sprays of it keeps all my furniture smelling fresh.
Tip #3: Treat Them Like Part Of The Family! This tip is a no brainer because our pets ALWAYS become part of our family. I would highly recommend pet adoption! Lilah has become such a wonderful addition to our little family and we can't imagine life without her!
